Anyone who has taken an Iyengar Yoga class has probably been exposed to the use of props in at least one pose. The props help with the depth, understanding, intensity and therapeutics of the practice. It's through this use of props and modification of the asana for the individual practitioner that Iyengar Yoga has developed to be respected by many for its therapeutic diversities and possibilities. I became interested in therapeutic yoga as a self study while working through my own injuries. I now realize that yoga and therapeutics are synonymous.
I have also spent many years in the study of woman's health through yoga. I have taught woman's yoga as its own subject in classes dealing with every aspect of woman's health from menstruation, fertility, pre and post natal, menopause and all other health issues including cancer and surgery. I have conducted teacher training programs in woman's yoga as well as weekend workshops and week long retreats on the subject.
I have held seminars, workshops and retreats, as well as teacher training programs in the US, the Caribbean, Canada and Asia. The longer the workshop or retreat the more anatomy, alignment, therapeutics, pranayama and philosophy is integrated into the subject we are studying.
I am available for public yoga classes and private sessions. In my opinion yoga is best learnt in a private setting. This personalizes the asanas to what is best suited for the individual. And more importantly, how the practice can be therapeutically address. Each person has a different body and different needs. No two people are the same. Why then, would a practice that has the power to transform every aspect of our being not be modified for specific needs, concerns and interests per individual?
Feel free to contact me with any questions concerning private yoga sessions, public class times, workshops, retreats, teacher training programs or just general questions about yoga.
Be happy and well.
Peace and many blessings,
Jeanne-Marie Derrick
